Texas Hold’em: Your First Hand and How to Review It

Start with the two ways a poker hand ends: everyone else folds and you take the pot, or the remaining players show their cards and compare their best five-card hands. BluffKing uses practice chips with no monetary value, so your first goal can be understanding the action.

Follow one hand from start to finish

1. Each player receives two private hole cards. The small and big blinds post their required chips before the first betting round.
2. The flop reveals three shared community cards, followed by another betting round.
3. The turn adds a fourth community card and another round of betting.
4. The river adds the fifth card. After the final betting round, players who have not folded reach showdown.

You can fold, call or raise. When no bet needs matching, you can check. Calling matches the amount you still owe; raising increases the price for others to continue. Read the amount needed to call rather than mistaking the whole pot for the cost of your next action.

Use five cards, not necessarily both hole cards

From strongest to weakest, the usual categories are straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, one pair and high card. Choose your best five cards from the seven available. You may use two, one or neither of your hole cards. Suits do not break ties.

Example: you hold A♠ Q♠ on A♥ 7♦ 7♣ 2♠ 3♥. Your best hand is A♠ A♥ 7♦ 7♣ Q♠: aces and sevens, with a queen kicker. An opponent holding A♦ J♣ has the same two pairs but a jack kicker, so your hand wins. It is not merely a pair of aces.

Watch three things before acting

• Position: who has already checked, bet or raised? Acting later gives you more information, but does not guarantee a win.
• The board: could someone have a straight, a flush or a stronger hand using a paired board? Your hand’s strength changes as cards arrive.
• The price: compare the call with the pot. Chips you invested earlier are not a reason you must call again.

What can you verify about the deal?

Standard poker supports checking the deal against a commitment after a hand. The server still knows the deck in standard mode.
